VENICE
You can tell everything and more about Venice: its history, architecture, the events that take place there or its food and wine all makes of Venice the most beautiful city in the world! Apart from being the main town of Venezia-county and Veneto Regione it is one of the most visited cities in the world. Venice lies on the Venetian lagoon and in 1979 has been declared World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. The city, historically known as the Serenissima, has always been isolated by the mainland until 1841 when the railway-bridge connecting Mestre to Santa Lucia station was built. Only in 1933 under Mussolini's government the Ponte della Libertà, a bridge for the cars, was built. To get to Venice by car is very exciting but to go along the long railway-bridge is thrilling as well. Venice is divided into 6 districts, the so-called sestrieri: Cannaregio, Castello, Dorsoduro, San Marco, San Polo and Santa Croce.
The city is developed on more than hundred islands, connected by lots of bridges and separated by canals and streams. Venice is a city full of works of arts, mainly kept in countless museums and majestic palazzi, where you can admire the masterpieces of artists such as Jacopo Tintoretto, G. B. Tiepolo, Tiziano, Veronese, Bellini, Giorgione and others more. The more visited is St. Mark's Basilica which overlooks the piazza of the same name and is all covered with golden decorations and mosaics that tell us about the glorious history of Venice. Modern arts, instead, are the protagonist in September when the „Biennale“ takes place every two years.
You can also visit the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, which includes lots of works of modern art artists. If you go to Venice, you'll not find the amusements typical of big cities, there are no huge discos, but it is rich in places, bars and small restaurants where you can eat the typical Venetian food, while maybe listening to good jazz music. Fish courses are preferred by tourists but it is also fashionable to eat a „stusighin“ at small bars. Typical cakes are very tasty, paricularly at Carnival time. Traditional festivals and events that attract thousands of tourists are the Carnival, the Historical Regatta, the Feast of the Ascension and the Redeemer Feast. The very symbol of Venice is the gondola, a small elongated boat which is steered by just one person and with only one roar.
