SAN DANIELE DEL FRIULI
The town of San Daniele is located in the heart of the Italian region Friuli Venezia Giulia, just on a hill among the Carnic Pre-Alps and Alps. From the top you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Friulian plain made of fields, meadows and groves and with clear weather you can also catch sight of Lignano Sabbiadoro. San Daniele's history is linked to its closeness to the rivers Tagliamento and Corno and to its geographical position, just middle way between the sea and the mountains. Here lots of peoples came together one after another : the Ligurians, Etruscans, Celts, Romans, Ostrogoths, Byzantines, Longobards, Franks, Hungarians and the Avars.
The geographical position represented and still stays for the luck of San Daniele. It is the reason for that special micro-climate which is the main „secret“, together with, of course, the following of the traditional method of production, of the delicious San Daniele hams. And just the ham is the protagonist of the event „Aria di festa“, which takes place every year during the last weekend of June and attracts thousands of people from Tre Venezie and also Austria, Switzerland and Slovenia.
The ham production is not the only business activity of the area, even if it is the most famous and known. The name of San Daniele, in fact, is also associated to other two products: the traditional slippers and costume jewelry. There has been a good development for building and electromechanical industries too. The main attraction for tourists is the visitation of ham factories, where you can observe how the ham is produced and seasoned. In every factory you'll find an internal shop where to buy products of first class quality at special prices.
